Greg Rhodes win his second Australian Senior Championship

Round 3 Report

Greg Rhodes has won his second Australian Seniors title with a three stroke victory at Royal Hobart Golf Club.

Rhodes led by four after 36 holes and closed with a 76 to defeat Kiwi star Michael Barltrop who finished with a 75.

Paul Chappell from West Australia finished in outright third place with his closing 73.

From GA Website

"Greg Rhodes completed golf’s toughest challenge today, leading from start to finish to win his second Australian Men’s Senior Amateur crown.

And capping a great week at Royal Hobart, Rhodes also played a key role in Victoria’s winning run to the Interstate Teams trophy on the famous Seven Mile Beach course.

Rhodes, 58, probably won’t write home about his closing round of 76 in blustery conditions that left him at even par overall after the third and final round.

But his second-day 68 had established the buffer the Coomealla member needed to coast to a three-shot victory from nearest rival and past New Zealand Senior champion Michael Barltrop, of Royal Auckland.

Rhodes, who first won this title in 2015, carded one birdie and five bogeys in blustery conditions, while Barltrop’s lone birdie was cancelled out by four bogeys in his 75.

Paul Chappell, from the Hartfield Country Club in Western Australia, climbed into third place on six over following a one-over-par afternoon round of 73.

Local member Peter Shaw was the leading Tasmanian in equal 15th at 15 over par after a closing 78."

Round 2 Report

Greg Rhodes (right annd below) has fired a scintillating four under par 68 to increase his lead in the Australian Senior Amateur Championship being played at Royal Hobart. Coupled with his opening round of 72 Rhodes now has the 36-hole lead on a total of four under par 140.

Also breaking par was New Zealander Michael Barltrop and his one under round of 71 sees him at even par and four behind Rhodes.

Lester Peterson (NSW) continued his good play and recorded a 74 to go with his round one 73. He is alone in third place. It is hard to see the winner not coming from the first three.

Play concludes tomorrow.

From GA Website

"Overnight leader Gregory Rhodes stretched his lead in the 2017 Australian Men’s Senior Amateur today.

The Victorian representative, who plays at Coomealla Golf Club, carded a four-under-par second round of 68 at Royal Hobart Golf Club to sit atop the leaderboard at four under.

The 58-year-old, who won this event in 2015, carded six birdies and two bogies to remain four strokes clear of his nearest rival, New Zealand’s Michael Barltrop at even par.

Barltrop returned a one-under-par 71 this morning on the Seven Mile Beach course that changed from calm and sunny conditions to overcast and blustery during his round.

Lester Peterson, from Bardwell Valley Golf Club in New South Wales, sits third on three over following a two-over-par afternoon round of 74 in testing conditions.

Local member Peter Shaw is the leading Tasmanian in equal 11th on nine over following a round of 78 this morning.

In the Interstate Teams event, the Victorian squad of Gordon Claney, Ian Frost, Kym Olsen and Rhodes continue to lead with an aggregate total of 442 (best three scores to count).

Victoria is followed by Western Australia in second on 457, Tasmania third on 467, Queensland and New South Wales on 468 and the Australian Capital Territory on 469"

Round 1 Report

All the scores are in and it is the familiar face of Australia's number one senior Greg Rhodes (left) who has the first round lead.

Rhodes shot an even par round of 72 to lead the strong field by one stroke. Four birdies and for bogies made up Rhodes' round.

In second place is NSW Senior Lester Peterson (right). Peterson had a round of 73. He had a steady round with three birdies on the front nine matched with three bogies.

Also in second place is New Zealand champion Michael Barltrop who also fired a round of one over 73. Barltrop will be hard to beat and is trying to record a rare double as he is a previous winner of the New Zealand Senior Championship.

Next comes Russell Rogers (NSW right) who also had three birdies on the front nine matched with three bogies for a round of 74.

Joining Rogers is Brad Dowling who recovered well from a poor start that saw him four over after five holes.

Defending champion Kym Olsen is one of a group of players on three over par 75. Olsen also recovered well after being six over after the opening ten holes.

From the GA Site

"The pinnacle event in Australian men’s senior golf, the Australian Men's Senior Amateur, has begun at the Royal Hobart Golf Club.

And there is already a familiar face on top at Seven Mile Beach.

Coomealla Golf Club member Greg Rhodes, the 2015 champion and third again last year, leads the field by one stroke with an even-par opening round of 72.

The 58-year-old Victorian carded four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys in breezy and overcast conditions.

Lester Peterson, from Bardwell Valley Golf Club in New South Wales, and multiple champion New Zealand’s Michael Barltrop are one stroke adrift of Rhodes on one-over 73.

Russell Rogers, from Tura Beach Country Club in New South Wales, and Brad Dowling, from Southport Golf Club in Queensland, round out the top five on two-over-par 74.

Local member, Peter Shaw, is the leading Tasmanian in equal sixth place on three-over-par 75.

In the Interstate Teams event, Victoria has taken an early lead, but the consistent West Australian team is only seven strokes behind with plenty of golf to go."

Play continues tomorrow.
