chappellwasnrPaul Chappell and Sharon Dawson have taken out the 2016 WA Senior Amateur Championships today at Melville Glades Golf Club.

After a blistering opening round, Chappell was a comfortable 6 shot winner shooting rounds of 70, 75 and 75, with Victoria’s Gregory Rhodes in second and Royal Perth’s John Banting a further shot back in third.

Chappell started his third round slowly, with bogeys on 3, 6, 8 and 9 to be 4-over at the turn and to have the chasers within reach. The Hartfield member closed with a 1-under back nine to put the result within doubt, highlighted by back to back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.

Its Chappell’s first WA Senior Championship win after reaching the qualifying age of 55. Even as a senior Chappell has continued to win on the open amateur circuit with wins at the Rockingham Bowl and the Hartfield Open since turning 55.

Lake Karrinyup’s Dawson started the round just one shot ahead of Alison Eather, but the current Australian and New Zealand Amateur Champion came to the fore in difficult conditions, cruising to a six shot victory with Janine Northrop of Melville Glades in second and Alison Eather of WA Golf Club third.

Dawson’s highlight of the round came on the par-3 17th hole, hitting a superb tee shot to two feet to set up a birdie.

“I’m very happy with the result — it was quite tough out there today and quite windy with the easterly blowing,” said Dawson. “I struggled with the par fives but between myself, Janine and Alison we all had a good match.” “The second round I played much better. I hit my greens and got up and down when I didn’t. Today my putting wasn’t flash but I got there and hit some pretty good shots to make up for it.”
