KYM OLSEN WINS QUEENSLAND SENIORS
Round 3 Report
Victorian Kym Olsen (pictured left) has won the 2016 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship played over 54 holes on the Bribie Island course.
Olsen fired a one over par 73 to maintain his overnight lead and defeat the Barltrop brothers, Michael (check shirt) and Rodney (black vest), who had made the trip from New Zealand. Always good to see these great players playing in our events.
Victorian Gordon Claney finished in equal fourth position along side the emerging NSW star Geoff Cranfield.
Olsen has now played just two Australian Senior Ranking events and he has moved into 28th place on the ranking table. He is off to play the British Seniors next month and we will watch his progress with great interest. Michael Barltrop is also playing in this event.
Claney has been in great form and he is such a fine player he is probably a little disappointed with his final round 78 that saw him finish in equal fourth position in this championship. He holds down second place on the national ranking table just a point behind fellow Victorian Greg Rhodes.
Geoff Cranfield is another newcomer to Australian Senior Ranking events and the scratch marker from Long Reef in Sydney has quickly made his presence felt. Look for him to feature in many events in the next few years.
The best score in round three belonged to another Victorian Ian Frost. He returned a card with two birdies and two bogies in his even par round of 72.
Ray Geary (Southport) won the Nett Section with a total of 216, with Robert Carter (Yeppoon) as runner up on 220.
The Club Teams Challenge, consisting of the three best Nett scores out of the four team members was won by the Redcliffe team of Mogens Andersen, Col Hallam, John Campbell and Neil Moss.
Players enjoyed three spectacular days at Bribie Island Golf Club with the excellent course conditions and service to be commended. Thanks to proud sponsors Prescare and the Moreton Bay Regional Council for their support of the event.

Round 2 Report
Victorian Kym Olsen (pictured right) has taken the lead in the 2016 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship after a second round of one under par 71 on the Bribie Island course.
In a wonderful display of controlled golf Olsen had just the one bogey to go with his pair of birdies to finish one under par. Olsen has recorded rounds of 77-71 for a 36-hole total of four over par 148. A recent addition to the senior ranks Olsen is no stranger to major tournament golf and is definitely expected to play well as he attempts to claim his first major senior tournament.
Fellow Victorian Gordon Claney has continued his outstanding recent form where he was won the last three Australian Ranking events he has played. He is now in outright second place with rounds of 76 and 75 for a total of 151 to trail Olsen by three strokes. Claney will certainly be in the mix when the last nine begins tomorrow.
Making up the final four in the last round will be the Barltrop brothers from New Zealand - Michael and Rodney. Michael has rounds of 76-76=152 and elder brother Rodney 77-76=153. Both have the golfing talent to fire well under par when the pressure is on in the final round.
Also on a 153 total is Nudgee senior Mario LaChiusa who performed well in the Gold Coast Senior Classic last week finishing third. LaChiusa has returned rounds of 76-77=153. NSW's Geoff Cranfield is next on 154 and it is hard to see anyone further back than this taking out the title.
The two round leaders slipped well back in round two. Sam Christie followed his opening 73 with a round of 85. Kiwi Neale Pitches opened with a 74 but recorded a second round of 86.
Special thanks to Mike Peeck who took the time to forward this photo of a nearby bushfire that was quite close to the Bribie Island course.
Perhaps it inspired Queenslander Phil Towle who after beginning on the tenth tee triple bogied the eighteenth to turn in six over par. A double bogey on his eleventh hole and he was eight over par. He then "caught fire" with birdies on 14, 16, 17 and 18 for a round of 76. Great finish Phil!
Or perhaps it was Victorian Ian Frost who stood on the sixteenth tee at level par for his round only to triple bogey that hole and then do the very same on seventeen. He then birdied the last for 77. Sad finish Ian. Golf can be cruel!
The tournament concludes tomorrow with more beautiful Queensland weather expected.
