2016 Gold Coast Senior Amateur Championship
July 20-22, 2016
Round 3 Friday July 22 - LINKS HOPE ISLAND
Victorian senior Gordon Claney (pictured centre) is close to the best senior golfer in Australia and again showed his class with a final round of even par 72 to comfortably win the 2016 Gold Coast Senior Classic. Claney had rounds of 75 at Royal Pines, 74 at The Glades and 72 at Links Hope Island for a 54-hole total of 221.
Claney shared the overnight lead with Murwillumbah senior Warren Colefax (right) with quite a few others very close behind. It looked like a real battle for round three but in an immaculate display Claney proved far too good for the top class field eventually winning by five strokes.
A few weeks ago Claney won the 2016 Australian Senior Matchplay Championship and he is clearly the inform senior golfer in Australia. He will now start as the favourite in the Queensland Senior Amateur Championship at Bribie Island Golf Club next week.
Second place in the Gold Coast Senior Classic went to Warren Colefax and this newcomer to major senior golf tournaments is a welcome addition to the playing ranks. Colefax has rounds of 77-72-77 for a total of 226.
Queenslander Mario La Chiusa (left) took out third prize with consistent rounds of 75-77-75=227 to record his first top three placing in an Australian Senior Ranking event. With the form he displayed this week La Chiusa will be a player to watch in future major events.
Visiting New Zealander Michael Barltrop was fourth after rounds of 75-76-77=228. Barltrop is also playing in the Queensland Senior Amateur Championship where the champion Kiwi senior will certainly be hard to beat. New senior Kym Olsen faded a little in the final round to finish in fifth place - another one to watch at Bribie Island next week!

Round 2 Thursday July 21 - THE GLADES
There is a bunched leaderboard after the second round of the 2016 Gold Coast Senior Classic played at The Glades Golf Club. The weather was perfect, the course in excellent winter condition and the greens as always were smooth and a good pace.
Joint 36-hole leaders on scores of 149 are Victorian senior Gordon Claney (75-74 pictured left) and Northern NSW senior Warren Colefax (77-72). Colefax had the equal best score of the day with his even par round of 72.
Victorian Kym Olsen was another to equal par and his rounds of 78-72 puts him in third place and just one stroke from the lead.
New Zealand senior Michael Barltrop is a previous winner of this event and is again well placed with rounds of 75-76=151.
Others still with a winning chance include Queenslander Mario La Chiusa (75-77), evergreen Redcliffe star Col Hallam (79-73) and NSW visitor Terry Small (79-74).
After opening with a score of 74 the round one leader Geoff Cranfield slipped back with a second round of 80. He will need something special to finish ahead of the current leading group. Victorian Ian Frost is level with Cranfield after his rounds of 79-75 and the strong hitting senior also needs a special final round.
The final round will be played at Links Hope Island Golf Club.

Round 1 Wednesday July 20 - RACV ROYAL PINES
Visiting NSW senior Geoff Cranfield (pictured left) from the Long Reef Golf Club has continued his excellent NSW Senior Order of Merit form and he now holds a one stroke lead after the opening round of the 2016 Gold Coast Senior Classic.
On a demanding RACV Royal Pines course Cranfield finished with an excellent round of two over par 74. The course played was the same set up as used by the PGA tour in recent Australian PGA Championships. It will again host this championship in 2016.
A group of four golfers are poised just one stroke behind Cranfield after their rounds of 75. They include visiting New Zealander Michael Barltrop, experienced NSW player Denis Dale, Nudgee player Mario La Chiusa and recent Australian Senior Matchplay champion Gordon Claney.

Round 3 Report:
The 2015 Gold Coast Senior Classic
concluded today with the final eighteen holes played at Links Hope Island Golf Club. The opening round was played at RACV Royal Pines and the second round at The Glades.
The winner of the major trophy was leading Kiwi senior Frank Borren pictured centre with Rodney Barltrop left and Gold Coast Senior Classic organiser Dave Morrison right.
Borren had held a one stroke lead after opening rounds of 74-71 and played the championship level Links Hope Island course like the experienced campaigner he is to return an excellent final round of 73. He defeated fellow Kiwi Michael Barltrop by three shots. Borren has played quite a few times in Australia and it was pleasing to see this very good player break through for a win in Australia.
In finishing second it was yet another high placing in an Australian Senior Ranking event for Michael Barltrop. He is a regular traveller to Australia enjoying the challenge of quality competition played on quality courses. His continued success sees him placed inside the top three on the current Australian Senior Ranking table.
Third place went to Rodney Barltrop with scores of 68-78-80=226. Barltrop was also the leading Over 65 player and his successful tournament included the best round of the tournament with his opening score of 68 (four under par and equalling his age) at RACV Royal Pines.
It was another very successful Gold Coast Senior Classic highlighted by the three great courses selected for this year's tournament and also the welcome participation of many of New Zealand's best senior golfers.

Round 2 Report:
The 2015 Gold Coast Senior Classic
continued today with the second eighteen holes played at The Glades Golf Club. The opening round was played at RACV Royal Pines with the final round to be played tomorrow at Links Hope Island.
The new leader is Kiwi international Frank Borren who returned a very good score of one under par 71 on the beautiful yet very challenging The Glades course. Following his opening score of 74 Borren has a 36-hole total of 145 and now leads the 54-hole tournament by one stroke.
Sharing second place are a pair of visiting Kiwis - brothers Michael and Rodney Barltrop. Michael followed his round one score of 72 with a two over par 74 while Rodney could not repeat the form that saw him begin with a round of 68, returning a 78 to share second place with his brother.

Round 1 Report
The 2015 Gold Coast Senior Classic
began today with the opening eighteen holes played at the Royal Pines Golf Club. This is a 54-hole event with the remaining rounds to be played at The Glades and Hope Islands Golf Clubs.
The round one leader is a true legend in Australasian Senior Golf - Rodney Barltrop from New Zealand. The 68 year old equalled his age with a wonderful round of four under par 68 that also included a hole in one on the seventh hole.
Barltrop has won the Australian Senior Amateur Championship three times and the New Zealand Senior Amateur Championship four times in a great senior golf career. Last week he represented New Zealand in the winning team that defeated the Australians at Sanctuary Cove Golf Club.
In an interesting sidelight Rodney Barltrop leads by four strokes from his younger brother Michael who opened with a round of 72. This would normally be good enough to lead and it will be interesting to see how the two brothers fair tomorrow and then perhaps in the same group on the final day.
Other good round one scores included rounds of 73 from Sam Quagliata and Peter Macrae. A trio of golfers recorded rounds of 74 - Frank Borren (another New Zealander), Garry Barber aand Peter Hannah.
