Kiwi Michael Barltrop wins the 2015 Royal Melbourne Senior Classic
Round 3 Report:
New Zealander Michael Barltrop (73-78-76=227) has won the 2015 Royal Melbourne Senior Classic played over three rounds on the East, West and Composite courses of Royal Melbourne.
Carrying a one stroke lead into the final round Barltrop was dominant in his victory eventually winning by seven strokes. His final round of 76 made him the only player in a strong field of 108 players to break 80 in every round.
In recent years Barltrop has been a regular traveller to Australia to compete in senior events. He is a top quality senior golfer and has always figured in the finish of these events but this is his first victory and one he will certainly be very proud of. Hopefully he will be continue to compete in Australia and challenge our leading players.
Second place went to Victorian Greg Rhodes (81-78-75=234). Rhodes closed with an excellent round of 75 and the relative newcomer to senior golf is not far from a major win. Third place was shared by two Victorians - Gordon Claney (79-81-77=237) and Bernard Bicketon (76-76-85=237).
Gordon Claney is the current Australian Senior Amateur champion and continued his impressive golf that has been a feature of Australian senior ranking events over the last twelve months. Newcomer Bickerton slipped back in the third round but his pair of 76's to begin the tournament show that he is a senior player to watch.

It is one the most anticipated events of the year and 2015 will be no different with another very strong field ready to line up for the 2015 Royal Melbourne Senior Classic. Played over 54 holes using the East, West and Composite courses it will again be fascinating to see how well the field handles the testing greens of the iconic courses.
It is very hard to pick a winner but among the main chances will be Victorians Gordon Claney, Ian Frost, Mick Asami, Gary Easte, Greg Rhodes, Alan Bullas, Ross Gordon and interstate and international visitors Rick Oliver (2013 winner - NSW), Arthur Kania (USA), Paul Maslen (NSW), Sam Christie (QLD), Darryl Whitehead (ACT), Steve Toyne (QLD), Mike Peeck (QLD), Michael Barltrop (NZ), Graeme Howland (NSW), Arthur Parkin (NZ), John Banting (WA), Ian McPherson (WA), Roy Vandersluis (NSW), David Limbach (NSW) and Sal Ballard (NSW).
First played in 2013, the Royal Melbourne Senior Classic is one of three National Ranking Senior Events played in Victoria each year. The Championship offers players aged 55 and over with the unique opportunity to play the West Course, East Course and then Composite Course as part of the 54-hole format. In 2015, the 108 players in the starting field originated from 85 different clubs from all over Australia and overseas.
Golf Victoria extends sincere thanks to Royal Melbourne Golf Club for staging. All three courses were presented in superb condition with all players and officials greatly appreciating the commitment of the members, the committee and the club and ground staff.
Royal Melbourne’s commitment to senior golf sees the club hosting the Royal Melbourne Senior Amateur over 18-holes on Friday 14 August as part of the week-long Melbourne ‘Sandbelt Swing” of senior events. Entry forms will be available in June for 18-hole events at Yarra Yarra, Kingston Heath, Victoria, Royal Melbourne, Metropolitan and Commonwealth commencing on Monday 10 August.
With the maximum field set at 108 starters it meant more than 50 senior golfers did not survive the handicap ballot which this year was 4.9.
