Report from Golf Queensland Website:

Victorian Ian Frost (Bendigo) shot the best final round of 74 to claim the 2015 Queensland Senior Men’s Amateur Championship at Southport Golf Club by five shots from repeat runner-up Sam Christie (Indooroopilly) and Barry Shannon (Wanganui).

The leaderboard was tight heading into the final round with 10 players within five shots of pace maker Barry Shannon.

Through the first nine holes of the last round, Peter Hannah had assumed the lead from Frost, with Shannon, Christie and Darryl Hearsch within three shots.

When both Frost and Hannah double bogeyed the long par 3 12th hole, the title race was even closer.

However, a crucial point came on the very next hole, with Frost making a birdie 4 to Hannah’s 7. And Shannon and Christie weren’t to be denied, with birdies of their own.

The closing four holes of Southport are demanding and Frost’s class as the highest ranked Australian Senior in the field, shone through, parring his way home.

He couldn’t be matched, with eventual runner-up Christie closing his round with a bogey and a double bogey.

Shannon also found grief and couldn’t apply pressure to Frost, as he bogeyed the final four holes.

Home course knowledge paid dividends for Ray Geary as he claimed the Overall Nett and also combined with fellow Southport members, Jeff Wood and Tony Irvine, to win the Club Teams Challenge.

Players enjoyed three spectacular days at Southport with first class course conditions and hospitality.

Course superintendent Stuart Moore and his team are to be congratulated for the outstanding manner in which the course was presented and, as always, thanks are extended to Steve Lamerton and his staff for the welcoming atmosphere at Southport Golf Club.

In 2016, the event will head North to Bribie Island.

Round 3 Report:

Ian Frost Victorian senior Ian Frost (pictured left) has emerged as a clear winner in the 2015 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship played on a very well presented Southport golf club. In an exciting finish it was not until the final few holes that Frost established his clear winning margin in finishing five strokes clear of Queenslander Sam Christie and overnight leader Barry Shannon (New Zealand).

Early in the front nine Queenslander Peter Hannah moved into the lead and held top spot until double bogies on twelve and thirteen saw him passed by Frost. Standing on the fifteenth tee Frost held a one stroke advantage over both Hannah and Shannon and two strokes over Christie. The championship was still up for the taking with just a few holes remaining.

The pressure was on and it was Frost who handled the situation the best. His run of four straight closing pars saw him eventually win by five strokes over Shannon and Christie who tied for second place. Hannah finished fourth and evergreen Redcliffe senior Col Hallam was his usual consistent self in finishing in a tie for fifth with Greg Duguid and Darryl Hearsch.

This is the first Australian Senior Ranking event victory for Frost but it will certainly not be his last. A strong hitting senior Frost is looking to play more senior events and will be one of the favourites for the two South Australian events to be played in early September and the Australian Senior Amateur Championship that follows later in the same month.

Barry Shannon had a successful tournament and goes back to Wanganui, New Zealand with second place in a major Australian tournament. Sam Christie has won several major titles already including an Australian Senior Championship and a NSW Senior Championship and it is pleasing to see him back playing in senior events.

The Southport course is a perfect venue for a senior tournament as it relies more on accuracy and strategic play then sheer power and once again it was praised by the large field that competed.

Local Southport member Ray Geary had the winning net score with a 54-hole total of 214 from his handicap of seven. He defeated Darry Hearsch (221 from handicap 4) and Barry Shannon (222 from handicap 3).

Round 2 Report:

The 2015 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship continued today at the Southport Golf Club. After the second eighteen holes it remains a tight battle with many players capable of winning with a good final round tomorrow.

Barry Shannon The second round saw similar conditions to round one but the scoring was certainly worse with almost all of the leaders blowing out with much higher scores. One player who held it together well was visiting New Zealander Barry Shannon (pictured right) who followed his opening round of 76 with a 75. His 36-hole total of 151 gives him a one stroke lead over Victorian Ian Frost (73-79) and first round equal leader Darryl Hearsch (72-80).

A previous New Zealand senior representative, Shannon birdied the first hole and then played steadily with twelve pars and five bogies to record his four over par 75 which was clearly the best round of the day. He will be hard to pass on the final day.

Ian Frost was unbeaten in the Australian side and must be a real chance to record his first win in an Australian Senior Ranking event while NSW senior Darryl Hearsch is also looking for his first win. Other close up include Brian Kesby (72-81) and Peter Hannah (75-78). Lurking close by is previous Australian Senior Amateur Champion Sam Christie (77-77).

Following the win last week of Kiwi Frank Borren in the Gold Coast Senior Classic and the exciting win by the New Zealand Seniors over the Australian Seniors the previous week it has definitely been an impressive few weeks for the visitors - Come On Aussies!

Round 1 Report

The 2015 Queensland Senior Amateur Championship began today at the Southport Golf Club. After the first eighteen holes it is a bunched leaderboard with many players still in with a real chance.

Darryl Hearsch There are three golfers tied for the round one lead after returning one over par scores of 72. They include NSW senior Darryl Hearsch (pictured right) and a pair of Queenslanders Brian Kesby (Headland) and Ian Travers (Pacific). All three played well on the tight Southport course and currently lead another trio of senior golfers by a single stroke.

The players grouped on 73 include Victorian Ian Frost, Queenslander Mario La Chiusa and Royal Canberra visitor Darryl Stuckey.

Altogether 23 players managed a score under 80 and with a good round tomorrow all are still capable of figuring in the finish on Wednesday.
