2015 NSW Senior Classic
The Lakes, The Australian, Avondale Golf Clubs
April 20-22, 2015

[metaslider id=3258]
The NSW Senior Classic has been played at various venues since its beginning in 2007. In that year bad weather reduced the event to just 18 holes and Rick Oliver and Paul Day were joint winners. Beginning in 2013 the event has been played at The Lakes, The Australian and Avondale golf clubs.

The 2015 NSW Senior Classic begins on Monday April 20 with 18 holes at The Lakes Golf Club. Tuesday is another 18 holes of stroke play at The Australian Golf Club before the final 18 at Avondale Golf Club on Wednesday.

Each round is a separate event in the NSW Senior Order of Merit while the total 54 hole tournament is part of the 2015 Australian Senior Ranking System.

The Lakes Golf Club (right) is rated number 14 (2014 Golf Digest Ratings) in Australia and was the venue for the 2011 and 2012 Australian Opens.

The Australian Golf Club (number 15) has recently been redesigned by Jack Nicklaus and will host the Australian Open in 2014.

The beautiful tree lined Avondale (66) is considered by many as the best on Sydney's north shore.

2014 Report:

  Round 3 Report

Rain threatened early but never arrived and the field of over 100 senior golfers enjoyed a wonderful game of golf on the beautiful Avondale golf course to complete the 54 hole 2014 NSW Senior Classic that began with rounds at The Lakes and The Australian.

Taking a four stroke lead into the final round NSW senior Paul Maslen (below right) gave no other player a chance recording the day's best score of 73 and a final winning margin of 9 strokes. Maslen again played great golf and was never really in any trouble as he cruised to victory with rounds of 77-71-73-221. Quite surprisingly for such an accomplished golfer this was Maslen's first win in an Australian Senior ranking event - well done Paul!

Winners
Veteran senior Roy Vandersluis again showed why he has been near the top of the rankings for many years with a final round of 75 that saw him claim the runner up prize. Vandersluis played the final nine holes today in two under par.

Finishing alone in third place was ACT senior and a newcomer to senior golf Darryl Whitehead. Today Whitehead slipped a little with a 79 but opening rounds of 78-75 gave him a total of 232. A stroke further away in a share of fourth place were Paul Day (75-77-81=233) and Garry Barber (80-79-74=233).

For the championship's final round the Avondale course setup was very demanding with all the tees on or near the back markers and many of the pins in their toughest spots - quite a challenge for the senior field! However, Maslen, Barber and Vandersluis plus several more senior golfers clearly demonstrated that good scores were there as a just reward for very good golf.

Once again the 54 hole NSW Senior Classic was a great success and all the players look forward to renewing the challenge with these three championship courses in 2015.

  Round 2 Report

On a day of perfect weather and with a magnificently prepared golf course a strong field of 114 senior golfers played the second round of the 2014 NSW Senior Classic at The Australian Golf Club today.

Winner
The best round of the day came from NSW senior Paul Maslen (right) who showed the field what could be achieved with a great round of one under par 71. Maslen is now the clear leader in the overall championship.

After playing the opening nine holes in a stunning three under Maslen then played solid golf on the tough closing holes to keep his score under par and record a four stroke win in the daily competition.

In second place in the 54 hole event is Paul Day who followed his opening 75 at The Lakes with another good round of 77 at The Australian and a 36 hole total of 152. He trails Maslen by 4 strokes. Not too far away in equal third place are ACT senior Daryl Whitehead (78-75=153) and Victorian visitor Gordon Claney (77-76=153). This group should fight out the finish tomorrow.

The course setup was exactly right for the field of senior golfers. Some pins were tough but the tee positions recognised that senior golf is not all about strength and a very enjoyable game of golf is often one where the challenge is shot making rather than stength and length off the tee - "Well done to The Aussie" was a popular comment from all the players.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final round at Avondale Golf Club.

  Round 1 Report

A strong field of 102 senior amateur golfers teed off at The Lakes Golf Club for the first round of the 54-hole NSW Senior Classic. The course was in good condition with the greens recovering quite well from recent heavy rains although understandably a little slower than usual.

The winner of the Lakes Senior Medal for the opening round was Bexley golfer Tom Yates who defeated Kooindah Waters golfer Paul Day on the second hole of a sudden death play off. Both had earlier finished with the good scores of three over par 75.

Winners
Yates (far right) was a happy and proud winner of his first major senior event and was disappointed when explaining that he had only entered for one round as he was unavailable for the following two days. N.B. The conditions of the event gave preference to players who entered for all three days with "spare" one day spots then being available to other entrants.

The tournament continues tomorrow with the second round to be played at The Australian Golf Club.
