Yet another day of warm conditions for the final round of the 2014 ACT Senior Amateur Championship played at Federal Golf Club. Once again the tournament organisers had provided an excellent course setup that allowed the field of senior golfers every opportunity to attack the pins and shoot some low scores.
With one round remaining there were ten golfers within a handful of shots but it was the ever reliable Stefan Albinski (pictured left) who again demonstrated what it takes to win important senior events. In a fine display of controlled golf Albinski carded a score of two over 74 to finish with a two stroke winning margin. His rounds of 75-71-74 gave him a 54-hole total of 220 (four over par). This win returns him to the top of the Australian Senior Ranking table.
Second place went to ACT senior Darryl Whitehead (right) who charged home with a final round of one under par 71. After opening with rounds of 74 and 77 the long hitting newcomer to senior golf showed what he is capable of and he will definitely be a contender in upcoming senior ranking events.
There was a three way tie for third place. The 36 hole leader after opening with 72 and 73, Sal Ballard started his final round poorly but then battled back well with three birdies in four holes on the back nine for a round of 78. Joining him in third place were Victorian Mick Asami (73-74-76) and another newcomer Mark Pearson (75-73-75). All three finished seven over par on 223.
Tony Kennings - Hole in One
Apart from some hot scoring on the Federal course a highlight was a hole-in-one from well known NSW senior Tony Kennings (pictured right). Quite amazingly this was the first ever hole in one for Kennings in a long career of top level golf - well done Tony!
The handicap competition was won by Gary O'Brien who defeated Brad Tepper on a countback after both golfers had finished with 54 hole total of 210.
Another very well run tournament by ACT Golf and congratulations to all involved in organising another successful week of golf.

Round 2 Report:
Another day of perfect weather at Gold Creek Golf Club for the second round of the 2014 ACT Senior Amateur Championship. The course setup was senior friendly with a little start on the tees and many (but not all) of the pins quite accessible. The conditions were set for more good scoring.
The leader after the second round is still Sal Ballard (pictured) who followed his opening 72 with another excellent round of 73. With a total of 145 (one over par) he holds a one stroke lead over Stefan Albinski (75-71). Two strokes behind Ballard are a trio of senior golfers - Robert Still (75-72), Denis Dale (74-73) and Mick Asami (75-73).
The highlight of the day was definitely Stefan Albinski's final hole which is the most difficult hole on the course. After a solid drive Albinski lined up with a five iron and had the great feeling of listening to the greenside cheers as it went in the hole for a very rare eagle.
Albinski's one under par round was matched by NSW senior Paul Maslen who had started with a disappointing 81 at Gungahlin Lakes but soon returned to the form that has made him one of Australia's top rated seniors for quite a few years.
The championship concludes tomorrow at Federal Golf Club and with such a bunched leaderboard there should be some exciting play.

Round 1 Report:
Round one of the 2014 ACT Senior Amateur Championship was played today at Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club. The leader after the opening round is Penrith senior Sal Ballard (pictured) with an even par round of 72. He displayed his famous short game and putting skills to lead a group on 73 that includes Tom Yates, Greg Stanford, Mick Asami, Laurie Cupples and Graeme Howland.
The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one to Tom Yates and a 3-3-3-3-3 start for Graeme Howland (three birdies and three pars).
